The Story
Michael Finch is the Owner of Harper Logistics, a Last mile delivery service. They specialize in delivering packages from a transportation hub to their final destinations.
“I was reading an article on how this E-commerce platform was trying to expand their delivery efforts by giving people the opportunity to start their own delivery business in partnership with the platform. They were looking for people with a background in the military and in building and managing a team. I had experience doing both so I did some more research and applied,” Michael says.
Michael’s credentials led him to being quickly approved for the position, which is a growing field as more E-commerce platforms make promises of next-day & even same-day delivery.
“Both of my grandfathers were doctors in the army, my father was a Lieutenant Colonel in the army, my sister went to West Point, and I went to the Marines right after High School. Leadership ran in my family and I knew my history would come in handy when starting my business.”
While getting the business off the ground, Michael was soon to find out transportation companies face their own unique set of issues their owners must navigate.

The Challenge
One issue was the holiday season, A hectic time for any delivery company. In fact, Harper Logistics were tasked with quadrupling their workload.
“We were coming into the holiday season, so there was a very aggressive ramp plan and we were required to move from 5 routes up to 20 as quickly as possible,” Michael states.
When you’re growing a business that aggressively in such a short period of time, any administrative issues are bound to become a bigger problem.
“I was managing everything through an Excel sheet and I found that I was making a lot of mistakes in terms of scheduling, understanding people’s time off, making sure that hours were properly recorded into the payroll system,” Michael continues, “and these errors had a tremendous impact not only on our bottom line but whether people were getting paid on time and correctly.”
Michael couldn’t stand the idea of his employees’ needs not being met and knew he had to figure out a solution, fast.

The Solution

“When I auto-create a schedule, the system will automatically fill in shifts based on my drivers’ availability and based on their stress profile to see if they’re working too much for that week,” says Michael.

“Since I’ve done the payroll export from Deputy to ADP Workforce Now****® now, my payrolling processing time has been cut to just minutes rather than an entire weekend and the accuracy has gone to 100%,” Michael says.
After Deputy solved his headaches with scheduling & payroll, Michael could put his full focus on ensuring every delivery makes it to their destination on time.
