The Story
The Snack Shack at One Pacific is a newly renovated beach side restaurant serving ‘Surfside Cuisine’ with a high-quality seafood-focused menu, served casually under palm trees right on the sand.
The Snack Shack at One Pacific is the latest iteration of a long time local spot. Many years ago the town built a 16’ by 25’ cinder block concession stand at the beach entrance at Pacific Blvd. The idea was to provide some snacks and foodservice options to beach goers at this local beach, which is just past the more heavily tourist occupied beaches near the Boardwalk.
For years it was operated as a small mom and pop shop, serving basic burgers, fries, ice cream, and soda. Over time it got pretty run down, then along came Hurricane Sandy, which completely inundated the little shack. For a few years after the storm the shack was reopened for just ice cream, chips, and sodas.
Finally, in March 2018, David Zelinger and Mark Goldsmith took over with the vision of completely redoing the little shack with all new electrical and gas systems, refrigeration, and equipment.
"Our town is mostly small, family owned businesses like ours and tend not to be very technically sophisticated."
The Challenge
David and Mark wanted to make sure their opening day ran smoothly. David asked his 16 year-old daughter and the rest of his team for feedback on their previous summer jobs. Without hesitation, they all mentioned scheduling as a major headache. “Our town is mostly small, family owned businesses like ours and tend not to be very technically sophisticated,” explains David, “The kids described their previous scheduling experience as disjointed, inconsistent, inefficient, and often, impossible to track hours or plan ahead. The primary method was a simple text from the owner for shifts and constant re-shuffling.”
With a short time-frame and 25+ employees, David and Mark began the hunt for a scheduling and time management solution. The owners knew that text messaging and Excel spreadsheets wouldn’t cut it. They wanted to cater to their young workers and provide an easy way to communicate and schedule them without any conflicts.
Their solution needed to be affordable and functional. David and Mark made sure to compare and test run several scheduling softwares before deciding on which one to invest in.

The Solution
The two owners found Deputy just in time and were ecstatic to implement the software right away. “Deputy was the only solution we found that met our needs for both functionality and cost,” says David, “It also made it easy to onboard employees before opening and communicate with all of them regarding progress. We chose the plan that let us pay only for active employees, and that is perfect for us.”
Scheduling wise, the team at Snack Shake were able to have a seamless opening week because of Deputy. “We posted 80 open shifts and they were filled in less than 10 minutes!”
As for the Snack Shack team, the feedback on Deputy has only been positive. “They love using Deputy!” exclaims David. “They love being able to choose open shifts, qualify for new jobs with training, and see more shifts open, easily swap, etc.”
Now, the whole team are Deputy advocates. “We even have friends of current employees approach us for jobs and say ‘We heard your scheduling app is great, we hate the scheduling at our current jobs’,” says David.
