The Story
Heuser Ace Hardware is a family-owned hardware store established by Bobby Heuser in 2015.
“I remember our first day pretty fondly,” Bobby says, “We were waiting patiently for weeks to get our permits approved. Then one day, we get a call telling us we were finally approved.”
Bobby was so excited to get his store up and running that he sprung open the doors of the business and yelled to the people walking by,
“We’re open! Come on in!”
Needless to say, Bobby was pumped to invite the community into his Ace Hardware location. And this enthusiasm can be seen in his dedication to building a great working environment for his employees.
“We’ve only lost one employee in the past 12 months, which tells us our employees love coming in,” Bobby says.
Bobby’s passion also translates to how he runs his store.
“We like to think of our hardware store as not only unique from other hardware stores, but unique to other Ace Hardware stores around the country.” Bobby says, “And what sets us apart the most is how we cater to our community. Not only do we stock supplies found throughout other Ace hardware stores, but we also offer products that people in our community are looking for.”

The Challenge
But it hasn’t been all peaches for Heuser Ace Hardware. One major hassle early on was scheduling employees using Excel.
“Back when we were using Excel, it just took up so much time. We had a ton of issues with it. Just trying to get everything right the first time was hard enough, there was nothing that checked for errors or anything of that sort, so there was typically a handful of mistakes.”
“Also, there’s no way for employees to put in vacation requests in there for you to document or for them to specify when they’d prefer to work. There’s also no way for people to swap shifts with each other with Excel so I was stuck having to do all of that,” Bobby states.
Using Excel was inefficient and adding to Bobby’s already large workload. Fed up with wasting hours with Excel for scheduling, Bobby turned to Google to try and find a solution. He quickly found Deputy and was attracted by its promise of speeding up the schedule making process and getting rid of all the hassle.

The Solution
“Going from Excel to Deputy was like night and day,” Bobby says.
“One of the biggest selling points of Deputy is how quickly my employees are able to pick it up and use it. They can clock in and out with ease and view their schedules whenever they need to.”
“Funny thing is, we actually planned to roll out Deputy over the course of three months because we assumed our non-tech savvy employees would run into some issues. It turns out that my entire team, which includes many older employees who aren’t good with technology, were all using Deputy in the first month. That says a lot about how great the interface is,” Bobby adds.
Deputy’s ease of use guaranteed his business didn’t have to waste time with a tiresome rollout process. Deputy can be set up on a tablet in each location, so even the older employees who don’t have a smartphone can quickly use it to clock in and out, as well as check their schedules and apply for leave.
“Not only does it take less time to make a schedule in Deputy, but after I’m done making it, there’s nothing else required from me until it’s time to make schedules again the next month.”
“Everything my employees need to do, whether it’s swapping shifts, putting in leave requests, or leaving a message for everyone in the team to see, Deputy allows them to do it. It’s a wonderful thing.”
Now that Bobby is freed up from the administrative aspects of managing his employees’ schedules, he’s happy to report he can now focus on what matters most: providing top-notch services to the people of his community.
“Deputy has made me a lot less stressed about my scheduling,” Bobby says.
“Thank you Deputy, for increasing the accuracy of my staffing model.”
